Genetics

A Century of Selection. Genetics Built for the Real World.

For more than 100 years, Sitz Angus has believed that great genetics must do more than look good on paper. They have to work where it matters: in the pasture, on the range, in the feedlot and ultimately on the rail.

Every breeding and management decision at Sitz Angus is centered on producing seedstock genetically designed to be profitable throughout the beef industry. That means balancing maternal ability, fertility, structural soundness, growth, efficiency and carcass merit rather than chasing any single trait or number.

Our goal isn't simply better numbers. It's better cattle.

Genetics With a Purpose

Balanced Genetics. Measurable Performance.

Sitz Angus has never believed in selecting cattle around a single trait.

The breeding philosophy requires discipline and a balanced approach, combining the visual evaluation of cattle with generations of performance records and increasingly sophisticated genetic information. Sitz seeks cattle that perform across numerous economically relevant traits while avoiding extremes that may improve one trait at the expense of another.

For commercial cattlemen, that balance matters.

A Sitz bull needs to sire calves that come easy, grow efficiently and perform downstream. His daughters need to be fertile, productive, structurally sound and capable of raising a calf year after year, even when resources and environments are challenging.

Phenotype + Performance + Genomics + Proven Cow Families

That combination is the foundation of the Sitz breeding program.

PAP Testing

Built at Altitude. Selected for Adaptability.

Pulmonary Arterial Pressure, or PAP, has been an important component of the Sitz Angus breeding program for approximately 25 years. The American Angus Association specifically recognizes the family's long-term collection and analysis of PAP data as part of its continued adoption of performance and genomic technology.

PAP testing helps identify an animal's susceptibility to high-altitude disease. The PAP EPD is expressed in millimeters of mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable. Selection for PAP can improve the genetic potential for progeny to have lower PAP scores and therefore improve adaptability in high-altitude environments.

For cattlemen operating in mountain country, that information can be extremely valuable.

Why PAP Matters

PAP isn't simply another number in the sale catalog. It's another tool to help customers match genetics to their environment.

Sitz Angus combines individual PAP measurements with the Angus PAP EPD and the rest of an animal's genetic and performance profile. The objective remains balanced selection: identify cattle capable of performing at elevation without sacrificing the other economically important traits customers depend on.

Data Behind the Cattle

Measure More. Learn More. Make Better Decisions.

Performance testing isn't new at Sitz Angus.

Previous generations were early advocates for performance testing in Montana and Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®). Today, the third and fourth generations continue collecting performance information and genomic data to improve the accuracy and depth of their selection decisions.

Modern Angus genetic evaluation allows Sitz and its customers to evaluate cattle across a broad range of economically relevant traits.

I would visually break these into four categories:

Maternal
Fertility • Heifer Pregnancy • Milk • Maternal Value • Longevity

Performance
Calving Ease • Birth Weight • Weaning Weight • Yearling Weight • Growth

Structure & Management
Claw • Foot Angle • PAP • Functional Soundness

Carcass
Carcass Weight • Marbling • Ribeye Area • Downstream Value

Sitz's own Bull Finder already gives customers access to PAP alongside birth weight, weaning and yearling ratios, CED, WW, HP, Milk, Claw, Angle, Marbling and $M, among other selection information.

Genomic technology gives cattlemen more information than ever before, but at Sitz Angus it doesn't replace generations of experience. It adds another layer of information to it.

Today's Angus genetic evaluations combine pedigree, performance and genomic information to produce increasingly powerful genetic predictions. The American Angus Association introduced genomic-enhanced EPDs in 2009 and later incorporated DNA directly into EPD calculations through Single Step Genomic BLUP.

Sitz Angus has embraced genomic technology while maintaining the fundamentals that have shaped the herd for generations.

Data helps tell us what an animal can become. Generations of cattle tell us whether the philosophy works.

That distinction feels very "Sitz" to me and would make a great pull quote on the page.

Genomics + Generations of Data

The Maternal Foundation

Great Bulls Begin With Great Cows.

The strength of Sitz genetics starts with the cow herd.

Sitz Angus selects females to be fertile, deep-bodied, feminine, structurally sound and capable of raising a big calf without requiring excessive inputs.

The goal is a productive female capable of working across different environments and remaining profitable year after year.

That commitment is measurable. Sitz Angus has maintained MaternalPlus® status since the program's first year in 2012, reflecting the program's continued emphasis on maternal data collection and productive females.

Maternal genetics aren't a trend at Sitz Angus. They're the foundation.

I would pair this section with one of their strongest photographs of mature Sitz cows and calves on Montana range. It helps prevent the Genetics page from becoming a page full of numbers and bull photos.

There is another component of genetic selection that can't be overlooked: phenotype.

Sitz calls it "The Look."

The program seeks bulls that are stout-made, wide-based, muscular, long-bodied and good-footed, while females are expected to be deep-bodied, feminine and equipped with quality udders.

Data informs selection, but cattle must still possess the structural soundness, functionality and phenotype required to perform in real-world conditions.

The numbers have to work. The cattle have to work, too.

That's another line I'd feature prominently.

"The Look"

Numbers Matter. So Does the Animal Standing in Front of You.

Genetics From Montana to the Real World

Different Environments. The Same Expectation.

Sitz genetics aren't developed for one ranch or one environment.

Bob Sitz described the objective to the American Angus Association clearly: cattle need to travel, breed, remain productive and work across environments ranging from deserts and valleys to high mountains, from Montana to California to Texas.

That versatility is ultimately the test of a breeding program.

Sitz genetics are now sold throughout the United States and internationally, and Sitz sires have consistently appeared among the top 25 sires for Angus breed registrations.

This would be a perfect location to reuse the Sitz Genetics Across America map we've been developing for the Impact page.

Technology has changed. The amount of data available has changed. The tools cattlemen use to select genetics have changed.

The objective at Sitz Angus has not.

Produce functional cattle that help customers make money.

That means maternal females capable of producing year after year, bulls designed to cover country and remain sound, calves with the performance to add pounds efficiently, and genetics capable of creating value farther down the beef supply chain. Sitz specifically selects for genetics intended to contribute rapid growth, desirable feed conversion and carcass merit downstream.

From Genetics to Profitability

The Goal Has Never Changed.

Find the Genetics That Fit Your Operation

Every operation is different. Elevation, environment, marketing strategy, replacement-female needs and breeding objectives all influence which genetics will create the most value.

Use the SITZ Bull Finder to identify bulls based on the traits that matter most to your operation, or talk directly with the Sitz team about your breeding goals. The current Bull Finder lets customers filter the sale offering using detailed performance, PAP and EPD information.
